Ecosystem Vocabulary Chart for Second Graders
By Georgina P.
A one-page vocabulary chart for 2nd graders on ecosystem terms like producer, consumer, and decomposer, with picture icons, plain-language definitions, Spanish translations, and sentence frames for students to write their own examples. It is designed for ELL and IEP learners and works well in a 20-30 minute science vocabulary block or small-group work.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the chart before an ecosystem unit by modeling how to read a word, point to its picture icon, and read the definition aloud with a partner.
- Discussion question: Which living things in our schoolyard are producers, and which are consumers? How do you know?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-read each definition aloud, pair students with a bilingual partner for the Spanish column, and let them draw or point to the answer before writing the sentence.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to add a fourth vocabulary word such as food chain or habitat and write a sentence that uses two chart terms together.
- Estimated time: About 20-30 minutes for the first use, then 10-15 minutes for review in later lessons.
