Flat Stanley Novel Study for Gifted First Graders
A week-long independent novel study of Jeff Brown's Flat Stanley, with a chapter-by-chapter reading plan and weekly Friday discussion focus for gifted first graders. It builds deeper thinking, inference, and questioning skills, with a Friday conversation to share ideas.
“help me come up with a novel study i can use with my gifted first grade students. I want to focus on deeper thinking and questioning. i want something students can use idependently. Ideally students would work on this throughout the week and meet with me on Friday to discuss”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the Friday talk routine on Monday so students know they will bring their written thinking to share one-on-one or in small groups.
- Discussion question: How would your life change if you could slide under doors and be mailed across the country? Which change would you like best, and why?
- Scaffold for students who find independent writing hard: offer sentence starters such as "I think Stanley feels ___ because ___" and allow drawings as responses.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write a question that doesn't have one right answer about Stanley's choices, and to compare his bravery with a hero from another story.
- Plan roughly 20-30 minutes of independent reading and thinking per day, plus about 10 minutes for each Friday conversation.
