MathK-2
2-Digit Addition Progress Probe for Second Grade
By Kate G.
A 10-problem progress monitoring probe for 2nd graders practicing two-digit addition, with and without regrouping (carrying). Students work vertically arranged problems with space to show their work, making it a quick, reliable check of where each child stands before and after instruction.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 10–15 minute baseline or check-in at the start or end of a unit on two-digit addition, administered individually or to the whole class.
- Discussion question: When you added the ones column, did the sum go past 9? What did you do with the extra ten?
- Scaffold for struggling readers and math learners: allow base-ten blocks or a hundreds chart, and read problems aloud while students point to each number.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to explain an alternate strategy, such as breaking numbers apart by place value, or to create a two-digit addition word problem.
- Estimated time: about 12 minutes to complete the probe and 3 minutes to score and note regrouping errors separately from fact errors.
