Controls and Variables Practice for 10th Grade Science
By Kyle N.
A short accommodated practice packet on the scientific method that walks 10th graders through control groups, experimental groups, and independent and dependent variables using a playful Bikini Bottom scenario. Key phrases are highlighted so students can quickly locate the variables and other components each experiment asks them to identify.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20 to 30 minute warm-up or guided practice before students design their own controlled experiments, and pair it with a quick review of the four key terms.
- Discussion question: In Patty Power, which group serves as the control, and why would removing it make the results hard to trust?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them underline the highlighted phrases first, then fill in a simple chart listing each variable and what it is.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to rewrite Scenario 1 with a different confounding variable and explain how it would weaken the conclusion.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes including discussion.
