Book Club Gallery Walk for Sixth Grade
A classroom gallery walk activity for 6th graders where students rotate through peers' book club one-pagers, noting themes, characters, and summaries and leaving positive feedback and thoughtful questions. It builds reading recommendation skills, respectful peer feedback, and speaking and listening habits, and it works well as a single class period with a response chart.
“Students have created book club one-pagers. Students will view each others one-pagers. Create a chart where students can complete a gallery walk of each others one-pagers.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this after students have finished their book club one-pagers, setting up stations around the room so each pair of students can rotate through the work in roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
- Discussion question: Which one-pager made you want to read a new book, and what specific detail caught your attention?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a sentence-starter card such as "I noticed..." or "I wonder..." so students have a model for leaving written feedback on the chart.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two one-pagers that feature similar themes and note how the authors represented those themes differently.
- Estimated time: About 35 minutes for the walk itself, plus 10 minutes at the end for a brief whole-class debrief on what students learned from their peers' work.
