Area and Volume Formulas Review
This 2-page packet guides 6th graders through calculating the area of triangles, parallelograms, rectangles, and trapezoids, as well as the volume of right rectangular prisms. It directly uses formulas from the STAAR 6th Grade Math Reference Sheet and is designed for independent student work.
“Hi! My 6th grade students are doing area of triangles, parallelograms/rectangles, trapezoids, and volume of right rectangular prisms. I have a sub on Thursday, and their quiz is Friday! I want the formula to be straight from the staar 6th grade math reference sheet. I want them to be able to complete it without me, since I will not be there.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet as a 45-minute independent review session before the quiz.
- Discussion question: How does the formula for the area of a trapezoid relate to the formula for the area of a rectangle?
- For struggling readers, read the problem statements aloud and provide a completed STAAR reference sheet for easy access.
- Advanced students can be challenged to derive the volume formula for a prism with a triangular base.
