Cellular Hierarchy of Heredity Graphic Organizers
A set of graphic organizers for 6th graders that maps how genetic information is stored, from the nucleus down to the gene, to accompany a DNA PowerPoint. Students fill in a nested brace map and key-term definitions, building vocabulary and the ability to organize scientific concepts from largest to smallest.
“Can you make me some graphic organizer for DNA that go along with this powerpoint”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Pair this with your DNA PowerPoint as a note-taking companion: students complete the brace map while you present, which works well in a 30- to 45-minute lesson.
- Discussion question: Why does it make sense that a cell contains a nucleus, which holds chromosomes, which hold DNA, which is made of genes?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: provide a word bank or pre-fill the 'Cell' level and one additional level so students only need to place the remaining terms.
- Extension for advanced students: have them explain how a single gene can influence a trait passed from one generation to the next, using the definition of heredity.
- Estimated time: about 20 minutes for the organizer, plus discussion time as needed.
