Combining Like Terms with Emoji Variables
A short practice set for 5th graders that introduces combining like terms through emoji-based variables like chickens, pigs, and horses. It builds vocabulary around terms, variables, and coefficients and moves students from picture-based counting to algebraic expressions. Designed for a 5-minute warm-up followed by independent or partner practice in a standard math block.
“Improve this resource. It's a combining-like-terms worksheet with emojis.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Open with the 5-minute warm-up so students can connect the emoji picture to the letter variable before they see any symbols.
- Discussion question: Why can we add 5c and 3c but not 5c and 3p? Ask students to explain what the letters are counting.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pair each term with a drawn sketch or counter manipulatives, and have them rewrite the expression in words before simplifying.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own expression with at least four terms and simplify it, then swap with a partner to check.
- Estimated time: About 20 to 30 minutes total, including the warm-up and the practice problems.
