Forensic Science Careers Research Project for 7th Grade
A week-long, partner-based research project in which 7th graders explore forensic science careers, build an informational poster, and present their findings. Students practice nonfiction reading, note-taking, and oral presentation skills, supported by career profiles and a comparison table. It is designed for a series of 45-minute class periods, with partners completing research, poster design, and a short presentation.
“Create a week long project where students research forensic science careers and make a informational poster with a partner, then present”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this across five class periods: introduce forensic science and read the career profiles together on day one, then let partners choose two or three careers to research over days two and three, design their posters on day four, and present on day five.
- Discussion question: Why do forensic scientists need to work in different specialties, and how might a crime scene depend on several of these experts working together?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a graphic organizer with prompts such as "What does this career examine? What evidence does it use? What training is required?" and pair them with a strong reader for the career table.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare salary data and education requirements across two careers and explain which factors they would weigh when choosing a path.
- Estimated time: About 4 to 5 hours of total class time, including reading, research, poster creation, and presentations.
