MathK-2
Addition and Subtraction Without Regrouping Practice
By Irena H.
A short practice set of 5 addition and 5 subtraction problems with numbers aligned by place value, up to 4-digit numbers and no regrouping. It builds place-value understanding and column-based computation for 2nd grade students, with grid tables that guide alignment.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as independent or small-group practice after introducing place value and column addition, ideally in a 20-30 minute math block.
- Discussion question: Why do we line up the ones, tens, hundreds, and thousands digits before adding?
- Scaffold for struggling students: Work the first problem together on a whiteboard, pointing to each place value column, and have them place their own numbers in the grid before solving.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to create their own 4-digit addition or subtraction problem that does not require regrouping and check it with a partner.
- Estimated time: about 20-30 minutes for all ten problems, with additional time for discussion.
