Comparing Percent Off Deals: A Station Rotation
By Kelly M.
A station-based personal finance packet for 7th graders that uses real-world shopping scenarios to practice calculating percent-off discounts and comparing final prices. Students work through guided steps, record their best-deal decisions, and answer reflection questions about when a percent discount beats a dollar discount.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a station in a math or money-management rotation, with roughly 15-20 minutes per station so groups can cycle through several scenarios in one class period.
- Discussion question: Why does a 25% discount on $120 save more money than a flat $25 off in some cases, and in what situations would the flat discount win?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Model converting 25% to 0.25 and multiplying on the board first, then have students complete the Store A calculation with a partner before working independently.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to find the break-even percentage where a percent-off deal and a dollar-off deal cost the same, and to explain the reasoning in writing.
- Estimated time: About 15-20 minutes for the full station, including the $80 follow-up discussion with the group.
