Math6-8
Rounding to the Nearest Ten and Million: Number Line Practice
By Charles L.
A practice set for 6th graders that builds place-value rounding skills from the nearest 10 up to the nearest 1,000,000, using a number-line "rounding hill" model with worked examples and visual number lines. Students strengthen their understanding of midpoints and rounding direction across place values.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a guided practice block in a 45-minute math lesson, working through the Rounding Hill worked example together before students try the problems independently.
- Discussion question: Why does a number exactly on the midpoint round up by rule, and how would that change if we always rounded down?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have students first identify the two neighboring multiples (such as 70 and 80) and mark the midpoint on a blank number line before deciding which way the number rolls.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to round large numbers to the nearest 1,000,000 and explain how the midpoint of 5,000,000 and 6,000,000 determines the result.
- Estimated time: about 20 to 30 minutes for the full set, depending on how many problems are assigned.
