Radioactive Decay and Radiation Types
This 2-page reading passage introduces 11th-grade+ students to the concepts of radioactive decay and the three main types of radiation: alpha, beta, and gamma. It is designed to build foundational knowledge in nuclear physics and chemistry.
“Lesson on radioactive decay and alpha beta gamma radiation”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as an introduction to a unit on nuclear science or as a review.
- Discussion question: How might the penetrating power of gamma radiation affect its use in medical imaging compared to alpha or beta radiation?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a glossary of key terms like 'isotope,' 'half-life,' and 'ionizing.'
- Extension for advanced students: Have students research real-world applications of radioactive isotopes in medicine or industry.
- Estimated time: 30-45 minutes.
