Wh- Question Words Practice for Newcomers
A short glossary-and-sentence worksheet that introduces the five basic Wh- question words (who, what, where, when, why) with picture cues and home-language translations. Designed for 1st grade newcomers at WIDA level 1.8, it builds reading recognition and simple sentence writing in English.
“Can you use these words and make a worksheet where students practice the basic Wh questions/. Students are WIDA level 1.8 They are such new comers to English.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as an introductory literacy station or a 20-30 minute whole-class lesson, pointing to each picture and modeling the word before students read it aloud.
- Discussion prompt: "Who is in your picture? Where is it happening?" Encourage students to point and answer with single words before writing full sentences.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pair students with a bilingual peer or let them copy a sentence frame such as "Who is ___?" and fill in a single word.
- Extension for more confident students: have them write two sentences using different question words about the same picture, or ask a partner one question using a Wh- word.
- Plan roughly 5 minutes per word, plus time for the final Remember section, for a total of about 25-30 minutes.
