Wonder Vocabulary Context Clue Slideshow for Grade 7
A slide-show packet for 7th graders that uses a context-clue guessing game to teach nine vocabulary words from R.J. Palacio's novel Wonder, pairing each sentence with a picture. Students build word-detective skills, using images and surrounding text to infer meaning before the definition is revealed, and the gradual-release structure moves from modeling (I do) toward independent practice.
“Create a slide show using the following words in context with a picture. The words are from the novel Wonder. fashionista, catastrophe, flaky, quivered, meticulously, apparition, babushkas, defective, giddy.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a whole-class warm-up or a 30 to 45 minute vocabulary lesson before or during reading Wonder, projecting each slide and pausing on the picture and missing-word sentence so students guess before you reveal the word.
- Discussion question: Which clues in the sentence or picture helped you guess the word, and how did the picture change your thinking? Follow up by asking how a word like 'fashionista' or 'catastrophe' shapes how we read a character.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word bank or a sentence-frame handout ("The clue ___ tells me the word means ___") so they can name clues before guessing.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them write an original sentence using one target word in a new context, or compare how Palacio's use of a word differs from its everyday meaning.
- Estimated time: about 1 minute per slide for guessing and discussion, roughly 15 to 20 minutes for the full set of nine words plus a brief review.
