Math6-8
Integer Operations Reference Guide for Grade 7
By Merrielee W.
A one-page reference guide that gives 7th graders the key terms and rules of signs for adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing integers, along with sentence starters to help them explain their thinking. It's best used as a handout students keep at their desks during integer practice, rather than as a standalone lesson.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Hand this out at the start of an integer unit or practice block so students have the vocabulary and sign rules within reach as they work problems.
- Discussion question: Why does <Math latex="-3 + (-5)" /> give a different sign than <Math latex="-3 + 5" />, and how does the rule for same versus different signs explain it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them color-code the signs in a few worked examples and read the sentence starters aloud before attempting independent problems.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own explanation for why subtracting a negative is the same as adding a positive, using the sentence starters.
- Estimated time: About 10 minutes to review the guide with the class, then ongoing reference during a 30-45 minute practice session.
