Simplifying Fractions to Mixed Numbers
This 2-page packet helps 6th graders master simplifying fractions to their lowest terms and converting improper fractions into mixed numbers. It includes targeted practice and scaffolding for students who struggle with the final steps of fraction simplification.
“Hello! I want a reteach lesson based off of taking a quiz recently, and my kids missing this short answer question. A lot of my kids could successfully convert to the improper fraction, and multiply correctly, to get 18/12. However, they couldn't make it to the final answer of 1 1/2. When I gave them the hint of simplifying and turning it into a mixed number, I got various responses -- 1 and 6/12, 1 and 3/6, and just 3/2 and 6/4. They are missing the concept of simplifying ALL the way. I want to review/teach this concept and also go over disability rules.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet as a reteach lesson following a quiz on fraction operations.
- Discussion question: Why is it important to simplify fractions all the way to their lowest terms?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a multiplication chart to help students find common factors.
- Extension for advanced students: Challenge them to create their own improper fraction problems and solve them, ensuring they simplify completely.
- Estimated time: 45-60 minutes.
