Box Method Division Modeling for Grade 4
A guided practice set of about two pages that walks 4th graders through dividing multi-digit numbers with the box (area) model, using 435 ÷ 3 as a worked example. It builds place-value thinking, partial quotients, and multi-digit division fluency aligned to NC.4.NBT.6, and works well as a 30-minute small-group or whole-class block.
“NC.4.NBT.6”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Introduce the area model by projecting the worked example and having students explain why the hundreds, tens, and ones are split into separate boxes before any calculating begins.
- Discussion question: Why does 3 go into 400 exactly 100 times, and how does that connect to thinking of 400 as 4 hundreds?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a blank area model with the place values already labeled and walk through Step 1 together with base-ten blocks before students work independently.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them solve a larger problem, such as 1,248 ÷ 4, using the box method and then check their answer with multiplication.
- Estimated time: About 30 minutes for the guided example and one or two practice problems.
