Periodic Trends and Atomic Properties Review
This 18-station review packet helps 10th graders solidify their understanding of modern atomic theory and periodic law. Students will explore atomic radii, electronegativity, ionization energy, and element reactivity, building skills in interpreting data and making predictions based on periodic table patterns.
“Please create a station review activity over these standards: the use of the modern atomic theory and periodic law to explain the characteristics of atoms and elements; construct an explanation about the relationship between the reactivity of an element and its position on the periodic table; use the periodic table as a model to predict the relative properties of elements based on the patterns of electrons in the outermost energy level of atoms (i.e. including atomic radii, ionization energy, and electronegativity of various elements). Please have 3 stations specific to atomic radius (1 with a graph), 3 stations specific to electronegativity (1 with a graph), 3 stations specific to ionization energy (1 with a graph), 3 stations about metal reactivity, 3 stations about nonmetal reactivity, and 3 stations over general periodic table information.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- This packet is designed for a multi-day station rotation activity, allowing students to explore different concepts in depth.
- Discussion Question: How does an element's position on the periodic table help predict its chemical behavior?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a partially filled-in graphic organizer to help students record key information at each station.
- Extension for advanced students: Challenge students to research and present on exceptions to general periodic trends.
- Estimated time: 3-5 class periods, depending on station rotation structure.
