Gross Pay, Deductions, and Net Pay Practice
A focused practice set of word problems for 9th graders, working through hourly wages, overtime at time-and-a-half, and the path from gross pay to net pay after deductions. It builds multi-step computation and real-world financial literacy, with a worked example that models each step before students work independently.
“Would like to create another worksheet with just problems figuring out gross pay, deductions and net pay.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 30-40 minute independent or partner practice block after a brief mini-lesson on overtime and deductions, and have students show each step as the worked example does.
- Discussion question: Why might two employees with the same hourly rate take home different net pay, and what role do deductions play?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them underline the hours, rate, and overtime threshold in each problem first, then complete the three-step structure (regular pay, overtime rate, overtime pay) before adding deductions.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare two job offers with different rates and overtime expectations, or to calculate how a change in the deduction percentage affects net pay.
- Estimated time: about 35 minutes for the full set, depending on the number of problems assigned.
