Reading Nutrition Labels: Practice Set for 6th Grade
A printable practice packet for 6th graders that uses real food nutrition labels to build skills in reading % Daily Value, saturated fat, sodium, carbohydrates, fiber, and added sugars. It includes blank label templates so students can compare an original meal against a revised, healthier version.
“I'd like this page reproduced with the nutrition label and the key feature information (percent daily value, saturated fats, sodium, total carbs, dietary fiber, and added sugars) remaining just like they are in the pdf. I just do not need all the information at the bottom of the page. I'd also like an additional page with three nutrition labels, with no numeric information. I'd like these sections blank so students can fill them in with their own information. I'd like this page entitled "Original Meals." I'd like an additional page with a single, larger blank nutrition label where students can enter the totals of the previous page's information. This page will be entitled "Original Meals - Totals." I'd then like two additional pages, identical to these two pages, with the new titles being "Revised Meals" and "Revised Meals - Totals." I'd like all pages to be in "Landscape" orientation to better fit the labels and other information.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a landscape handout in a health or science block of about 45 minutes, either whole-class with a brief label walkthrough or in pairs at stations.
- Discussion question: Which nutrient on the label would you change first to make this meal healthier, and why does the % Daily Value help you decide?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a short key explaining that 5% DV or less is low and 20% DV or more is high, and have students circle one nutrient at a time.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them calculate how much of the daily sodium or added sugar limit a full day of meals would use, and justify their revised meal choices in writing.
- Estimated time: about 10 minutes to introduce the labels, 20 to 25 minutes for students to fill in the Original and Revised pages, and 10 minutes for totals and discussion.
