Place Value and Digit Values Practice for Grade 4
By Andrew B.
A short, worked-example practice set that walks 4th graders through the difference between place and value using a place value chart and multi-digit numbers up to the millions. It builds skills in reading place positions, identifying digit values, and applying that understanding to new numbers, and it is well suited to a 30-40 minute math block or independent practice.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or guided practice after a brief mini-lesson on the base-ten place value chart, working through the worked example (6,234,819) together before students attempt the practice problems.
- Discussion question: Why is the value of the digit 2 in 6,234,819 different from the value of the digit 2 in 4,520? Ask students to explain in their own words how position changes worth.
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a blank place value chart with the column headers filled in, and have students place each digit into its column before identifying its value.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write a 7-digit number with a specific digit in the Ten Thousands place whose value is 40,000, then explain how they know.
- Estimated time: About 20 minutes for the worked example and guided practice, plus 10-15 minutes for independent problems.
