Number Bonds and Fact Families for First Grade
A practice set for 1st graders who are still getting comfortable with number bonds and fact families. Students fill in missing parts using ten-frame drawings, then write the four related addition and subtraction facts for each bond, building part-whole reasoning and fluency with sums to 10.
“I need a lesson and activity for 1st grade students struggle with fact families and number bonds”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 15 to 20 minute guided practice block after a short whole-class demonstration of one number bond, such as 5 split into 3 and 2.
- Discussion question: "If the whole is 5 and one part is 3, how do you know the other part without counting?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide physical counters or a paper ten frame and have students model each bond before drawing, and read the number sentences aloud together.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to create their own number bond and fact family for a whole of 8 or 10, then explain why subtraction facts come from the same three numbers.
- Estimated time: About 15 to 20 minutes, with another 5 minutes for a quick class share of answers.
