Earth Processes Vocabulary and Stop-to-Think Questions
A two-part 4th grade earth science packet covering destructive and constructive processes, weathering, erosion, and deposition. Students build vocabulary through a picture-supported term sheet, then answer six Stop to Think questions with sentence starters that move from identifying agents of erosion to explaining cause, correlation, and why monitoring landscape change matters.
“Create a vocabulary sheet with a picture, 5th grade definition, and example sentence based on the following chapter. the vocab words to include are: Destructive Process, Constructive Process, Weathering, Erosion, Deposition. ON a different page put the stop and think questions with sentence starters: STOP TO THINK 1 What are four agents that can break down and/or move earth material? STOP TO THINK 2 What are some natural formations made by erosion? STOP TO THINK 3 What are some ways that people speed up the process of erosion? STOP TO THINK 4 What is the driving force of erosion? of deposition? Explain.251 STOP TO THINK 5 Is the relationship between erosion and deposition causal or just correlational? Explain your answer. STOP TO THINK 6 Why is it important to monitor changes in erosion and deposition?”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use the vocabulary table as a pre-reading or post-reading activity before or after a chapter on landforms, allowing about 20 minutes for definitions and drawings.
- Discussion question: How is a river wearing down a hillside different from a river dropping sand to build a delta, and why do both matter to the land?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: pair them with a partner for the vocabulary drawings and provide a word bank of agents (wind, water, ice, gravity) for the first Stop to Think question.
- Extension for advanced students: have them explain why erosion and deposition are linked as a system, then discuss whether that link is causal or only correlational.
- Estimated time: roughly 45 minutes total for the vocabulary page and all six Stop to Think questions in a single block.
