CVC Word Practice: Missing Vowel Picture Match
A short picture-based practice set in which early readers look at a picture, say the word, and write the missing short vowel to complete each CVC word. It builds phonics, vowel discrimination, and spelling skills, and it pairs well with a vowel sound sort activity included in the same packet.
“reading cvc words and spelling with missing vowels”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 10-15 minute warm-up or independent station during a phonics block, after students have practiced saying short vowel sounds aloud.
- Discussion question: How do you know which vowel fits the picture, and what sound does the vowel make in the word?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Say each picture word together first, then segment the sounds (for example, /c/ /a/ /t/) before writing the missing vowel from the a, e, i, o, u choices.
- Extension for advanced students: Have them read each completed word aloud, then brainstorm two additional CVC words that use the same vowel.
- Estimated time: about 10-15 minutes for the picture match, plus a few more minutes if you follow with the vowel sound sort.
