Equivalent Fractions Intervention for 4th Grade
This 5-day intervention packet provides targeted instruction for 4th graders on understanding and generating equivalent fractions. It includes hands-on activities with colored rods and area models, as well as applications to fractions greater than 1 and measurement. The packet is designed for 25-minute daily sessions and includes scaffolding for struggling readers.
“I need a 4th grade intervention activity that will be 5 days long and 25 minutes each. This group is getting targeted and intensive instruction. I will share the learning goals they will need to work on, and I just it to have extra scaffolding for struggling students: In this lesson, students build their intuitive understanding of when fractions are equal by relating colored rods and the fractions they represent. Students use the colored rods to build various number lines showing when fractions are equivalent. In this lesson, students use area models to generate equivalent fractions. They match equivalent fractions. Students also determine whether pairs of fractions are equivalent. In this lesson, students apply knowledge of recognizing and generating equivalent fractions to fractions greater than 1. They generalize that for any fraction, they can multiply the numerator and denominator by the same factor to generate an equivalent fraction. Students then extend this understanding to mixed numbers. In this lesson, students measure lengths of objects to the nearest eighth of an inch using a standard ruler and then make a line plot to represent that data. As they make line plots, they consider equivalent fractions to match the data values to the intervals on the line plot.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet for targeted, intensive instruction over five 25-minute sessions.
- Discussion question: How can we use visual models to prove that two fractions are equivalent?
- Scaffold: Provide pre-made fraction strips or manipulatives for students who struggle with initial conceptualization.
- Extension: Challenge students to find multiple equivalent fractions for a given fraction and explain the pattern.
- Estimated time: 25 minutes per day for 5 days.
