Discovering Circles: Circumference and Diameter Slides
A slide-deck lesson introduction for 7th graders that explores the relationship between distance across a circle (diameter) and distance around it (circumference). Students predict, discuss, and consolidate the idea through turn-and-talk and guided prompts, making it a strong launch for a 45-minute geometry block.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this deck as a whole-class launch at the start of a circles unit, moving through the launch, explore, and consolidate phases in roughly 30 to 45 minutes.
- Discussion question: If the distance across a circle is 1 unit, about how many units do you think it takes to go all the way around, and why?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: provide a string or paper strip so students can physically measure the diameter and wrap it around a circular object to see the ratio.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to explain why the ratio stays the same for every circle, and to connect it to the constant pi.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes for the prediction slide and turn-and-talk, with the remaining time spent on exploration and wrap-up.
