Loan Eligibility and the 5 C's of Credit
A practice set for 10th-grade entrepreneurship students that introduces the 5 C's of Credit (Character, Capacity, Capital, Collateral, Conditions) and walks learners through what lenders look for when reviewing a small business loan application. It builds financial literacy, document-analysis, and applied decision-making skills, and is suited to a single class period or a small-group activity focused on South Carolina business financing.
“create an activity for entrepreneurship class learning about completing a loan application...based on entrepreneurship sc standards H.3 and H.4”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 40-50 minute guided practice lesson after introducing business funding options, pairing students to work through the scenario and eligibility questions together.
- Discussion question: Which of the 5 C's would be hardest for a first-time business owner to demonstrate, and what could they do to strengthen it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a one-page glossary of the 5 C's and have students complete a simple T-chart matching each C to an example before tackling the full application scenario.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to draft a short justification memo explaining whether they would approve the $50,000 loan request, citing at least three of the 5 C's with evidence from the business plan.
- Estimated time: about 45 minutes including discussion; allow extra time if students complete the extension task.
