Characterization and Complete Sentences Guided Notes
A two-part guided note sheet for 7th graders that defines characterization, contrasts direct and indirect characterization with examples, and then reviews what makes a sentence complete. Students fill in key terms and short examples as they read, which builds reading-analysis vocabulary alongside basic grammar.
“note sheet for : What is characterization? Indirect characterization? What is a complete sentence?”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 30-minute note-taking mini-lesson at the start of a literature unit or before a short story, with students completing blanks as you model each example aloud.
- Discussion question: In the sandwich example, what trait does Mia show, and which clue helped you figure that out?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a word bank of trait words (generous, brave, curious) and pair students to talk through the indirect examples before writing.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write their own two-sentence passage that reveals a character's trait indirectly, then swap with a partner to identify the trait.
- Estimated time: 25 to 35 minutes, depending on how much discussion you add to the complete-sentence section.
