Reading Comprehension Practice Set for 6th Grade
A short multiple-choice reading comprehension set with five questions covering main idea, supporting details, character feelings, problem-solving, and setting. It is designed to build careful reading and answer-choice reasoning for 6th graders, including students in special education ELA settings who benefit from concrete, clearly worded options.
“Write 4 reading questions to go with any text. Make one a general comprehension question like what is the story about. Make one a text dependent question and one an inference question. This is for a 6th grade special education ELA class.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20 to 30 minute independent or small-group check after students read a short story together, reading aloud as needed for students who need support with decoding.
- Discussion question: Which clues in the story helped you choose your answer for the main idea question, and how did you know the other choices were not the best fit?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pre-teach the three tip words (main idea, details, clues) and model how to eliminate one answer at a time, then have students point to the sentence in the text that supports their choice.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to write one additional question about the story that requires inferring a character's motivation, and to explain the text evidence they would use to answer it.
- Estimated time: About 25 minutes including a brief review of answers.
