Science6-8
Identifying Chemical Properties in Matter
By Autumn A. T.
A short practice set for 7th graders that introduces chemical properties such as flammability and reactivity and contrasts them with physical properties. It builds vocabulary and the ability to recognize when a substance changes into a new one, aligned to standard P.7.5A.2.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a warm-up or follow-up to a physical and chemical change lesson, roughly 20 to 30 minutes of independent or partner practice.
- Discussion question: Why can you only observe a chemical property during a chemical change, and how is that different from observing a physical property like color?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Pair the key terms (chemical property, flammability, reactivity) with concrete examples such as a match burning or iron rusting before students read the passage.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to design their own example of a chemical property and explain what new substance forms as evidence.
- Estimated time: about 25 minutes including a brief class share-out.
