Math3-5
3-Digit by 1-Digit Multiplication with Area Models
By CANDACE G.
A practice set of 3-digit by 1-digit multiplication problems that uses area models and partial products to build place value understanding. It includes a worked example and guided practice, with students filling in partial products and adding them for a final sum. Designed for 4th graders working on multi-digit multiplication.

Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a whole-class mini-lesson on the first example, then move students into independent or partner practice on the remaining problems, roughly 30 to 40 minutes.
- Discussion question: Why does splitting 426 into 400, 20, and 6 give the same answer as multiplying 426 directly?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Have them write the expanded form (such as 400 + 20 + 6) above the area model before multiplying each cell, and check each partial product against place value.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to compare the area model method with the standard algorithm and explain which steps are the same and which differ.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes to review the example and 25 to 35 minutes for the practice problems.
