MathK-2
Subtraction Word Problems in Daily Life
By Jared M.
A practice packet of real-world subtraction word problems for 2nd graders, covering shopping, sharing snacks, and similar everyday situations. Students build subtraction fluency and reasoning while working through a worked example with a ten-frame visual and a short set of guided problems.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 20 to 30 minute independent or partner practice block after you have introduced subtraction within 100 and modeled the start, take away, left equation.
- Discussion question: In the snack problem, why do we subtract instead of add, and how can you tell from the story words?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: read each problem aloud together, underline the numbers, and let students use counters or a ten frame to count back before writing the equation.
- Extension for advanced students: have them write their own real-life subtraction story with a missing number and trade with a partner to solve.
- Estimated time: about 5 minutes per problem, so plan roughly 25 minutes for the full set including the example.
