Finding Linear Equations from Graphs, Grade 8
A practice set of ten drawn straight-line graphs that guides 8th graders through calculating slope and y-intercept to write equations in slope-intercept form, with a worked example to model the process. It builds skills in reading coordinate grids, computing rise over run, and translating a graph into y = mx + b.
“create ten actual drawn straight line graphs which can be used for calculating eqution of the line”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as independent practice after a mini-lesson on slope-intercept form, or as a station activity in a 30-45 minute block.
- Discussion question: Why does the y-intercept show up as the point where the line crosses the y-axis, and how can you check your answer by plugging in a point from the graph?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have them first circle two clearly labeled grid points, then compute rise and run in a table before writing the equation.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write the equation of a line through two points that are not on integer coordinates, or to explain why vertical lines cannot be written in this form.
- Estimated time: about 2 minutes per graph, roughly 20-30 minutes for the full set.
