True and False Equations Remediation for First Grade
A two-day small-group remediation plan, with two 15-minute lessons, that helps 1st graders decide whether equations are true or false by comparing quantities on each side of the equal sign. Each day follows an I Do, We Do, and independent practice sequence, using counters or connecting cubes throughout.
“Take this lesson plan and make it into a 2 day small grjoup remediation plan. Each lesson being 15 minuites in length with an I do and we do, and indiependent practice.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Pull this group during centers time, and keep the 15-minute blocks tight by having counters (about 20 per child) and whiteboards ready before you start.
- Discussion question: "If the left side has 5 cubes and the right side has 3 cubes, is the equal sign telling the truth? How do you know?"
- Scaffold for struggling readers: have students build each side of the equation with cubes first and push them together or line them up to see whether they match before deciding true or false.
- Extension for advanced students: ask them to write one true and one false equation of their own, then explain how they could prove each one with cubes.
- Estimated time: about 15 minutes per day across two days, plus a brief transition to independent practice pages.
