Algebraic Word Problems Practice
This 12-problem practice set for 9th graders challenges students with increasingly complex algebraic word problems. It includes problems requiring distribution, simple fractions, and subtraction, with visuals to match diverse topics. This packet is designed to build algebraic reasoning and problem-solving skills.
“Can you make an identical version of this packet but change the topic of the word problems and change the visuals in the problems to match the topics? Also, include some expressions that require distribution, simple fractions (e.g. x/2 where the solution, x, only equals an even number), and some expressions involving subtraction throughout the problems in the packet. This packet should generally be a little more challenging than the one I attached. Please also mix the types of problems, but make the questions increasingly more challenging. Only make 12 total problems.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this packet as a 45-60 minute independent practice activity or as a review.
- Discussion question: How can you use the distributive property to simplify expressions in word problems?
- For struggling readers, encourage them to draw out the word problems or work with a partner.
- Advanced students can be challenged to create their own word problems using the concepts presented.
- Estimated time: 45-60 minutes.
