Math3-5
Place Value, Expanded Form, and Regrouping Review
By Heath H.
A 4th grade review sheet that revisits place value and expanded form, then builds toward rounding to the hundred thousands and subtraction with regrouping using the standard algorithm. Students work through worked examples and practice problems, making it a solid independent or small-group review packet for a math block.
Customize for your classroom
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use this as a 30-40 minute review after introducing multi-digit place value, working through the worked example for 42,508 together before students attempt the practice problems on their own.
- Discussion question: Why can we skip the zero in the tens place when writing 42,508 in expanded form, and what would change if we kept it?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a place value chart so students can physically place each digit before writing the expanded form or rounding.
- Extension for advanced students: Ask them to create their own 6-digit number, round it to the nearest hundred thousand, and explain how regrouping would be needed to subtract it from another number.
- Estimated time: about 35 minutes for the full packet, with the rounding and subtraction sections taking the most time.
