Analyzing Non-Fiction Text Types
This 7-page packet guides 9th graders in analyzing six different types of non-fiction texts: autobiography, biography, formal and informal essays, a speech, a news/feature article, and a functional text. Students will identify text types, purposes, and audiences, and compare/contrast them, building critical reading and analytical skills.
“I want an activity for a 9th grade English Language Arts class where students analyze some short non-fiction texts. I want them to analyze the features of each of the different types of non-fiction texts. The text types should include autobiography, biography, essay (formal and informal examples), a speech, and a news or feature article, and a functional text. For each text, it should ask what the text type is, what the purpose of the text is, and the audience. It can also ask how it is similar to or different from other text types. The text excerpts should be relevant topics for a diverse, urban population of teens.”
Teacher Guide & Tips
- Use as a 1-2 day station rotation activity or a jigsaw lesson.
- Discussion question: How does the author's purpose influence the choices they make in presenting information?
- Scaffold for struggling readers: Provide a graphic organizer with definitions of each text type before beginning.
- Extension for advanced students: Have students find their own examples of each text type and analyze them.
- Estimated time: 90-120 minutes.
